Forests and Food Security

Forests play a vital role in food security and nutrition around the globe. Linked below is a video that explores the impact of forests on food security and nutrition along with the interaction between traditional production agriculture and forestry. We encourage you to watch the linked video and utilize the discussion points below to guide conversations in your classrooms and communities! When we travel abroad with students and farmers this is often a topic of discussion.

Sustainable Forestry for Food Security and Nutrition

Discussion Points

  • Why are forests so important to food security and nutrition?
  • Of the many benefits that forests provide for food security and nutrition which do you feel is the most important and why?
  • Many facts were shared in the video. Which fact surprised you the most (or did you find most interesting) and why?
  • Towards the end of the video integrating production agriculture and forestry was stressed. Do some additional research and find how this is being done around the globe. Share your findings with others.

Forests are important to food security and nutrition because people who are food insecure rely on forest products to get vital nutrients. Forests also provide fuel for cooking which makes food more palatable and nutrients are more accessible.

we must work to conserve the forests around the world in order for life to continue

Sustainable forestry is important if we want to keep up with our growing population and reduce the number of people who go hungry everyday. At the moment 795 million people suffer from hunger daily. With sustainable forestry that number would go down as sustainable forestry is a need for food security and nutrition.

Forests are a very important agricultural resource to many people around the world not only for the obvious reason of using trees for building materials but also in providing nutrients to to those who live near them and use their resources to provide food for themselves and their families. A very important fact mentioned in this video was that forests help mitigate CO2 emissions which allows for healthier living of people world wide.

795 million people suffer from hunger everyday. If we can have more trees then we can have been protected eco systems and better food security. Forest provide food and shelter. food security can be increased while having to maintain or expanding forestry. Forest help controlling on climate change. Non wood forests provide medicine. The income of forestry 650 billion U.S dollars. Trees are part of renewable energy.

FORESTS ARE GOOD FOR LIFE AND ANIMALS AND PLANTS, WE SHOULD DO WHAT WE CAN TO PRESERVE IT.

the forsests are important are important to food secerity becauce it provides nutrents to insecure people and provides fuel to cook food

During the video they bring up how wood is one of the most renewable resources that are used right now. This is very important because a lot of our energy comes from trees, so the conservation of trees is very important because they are used all the time. They are used for energy, paper, structures and much more. Almost all structures used wood in some way to build it. Without wood we would have to find many different and alternative materials to replace wood, forest conservation needs to be done.

almost 50 million people depend on forests for their income of 600 billion dollars to buy food.
I feel forests would be really effective to help fight global carbon emissions to help resolve climate change.
The fact that surprised me is how little rain forests are left in the world yet they still help clear 10% of global emissions.
What i found for integrating agriculture and forestry, it has a negative effect on the forest specifically the Amazon. In some parts it has been used as cattle pasture and it destroys the rain forest by reducing plant and animal species

Forest are important to food security and nutrition because they provide food to people with trees like banana trees. Out of all of the facts in the video the one that surprised me the most was the one that said 795 million people suffer from hunger everyday. This stood out to me the most because so many people are already suffering from hunger everyday and the population is just continuing to rise. So to prevent more of the population from hunger, we need to save our forest because different trees can be used as sources of food and other products.

I did not realize how much forests effect the economy, and how much food the trees provide.

Forests are good for living things and we need to preserve them

we need to stop cutting trees before its too late

Forest are one of the most important things in the world that contain most of our food and animals. Out of all the facts the on that was the worst was that almost 1 billion people suffer from hunger everyday.

Forests are needed for people in undeveloped countries to survive.

trees are good for life

We need to save the forest and practice sustainable agriculture or we are all going to be killed by hunger and climate change. And we need to do it now

Trees are very important they provide food and shelter and so much more

I didnt know that 75% of the worlds freshwater was in forest. I also didnt know that some of the fruits are bleached with nutrition.

its crazy how much people rely on trees and plants for shelter and food.

I didn't know that so many people relied so heavily on forests for food and other stuff.

We need to stop cutting trees down, they help us out so much that we need to have them.

Forests are important to food security and nutrition because if we were adopt sustainable and forest management, it would allow us to help reduce hunger and micro-nutrient deficiency (795 million suffering from hunger and approximately 2 billion from micro-nutrient deficiency).

I never realized that people relied so heavily on forests to provide food and other essential needs

795 million people suffer from hunger every day

I never knew how much people rely on forests for food and minerals it is nice that they use every part of the tree as fuel for the fire to cook their food instead of wasting it

Agriculture is not the sole reason for deforestation. Land development for housing and non sustainably managed logging are also causes of deforestation.

It's crazy how much people rely on forest in every day life. What amazes me the most is how much carbon the forest around the world take in. In this video you can really see how climate change has effect life of the people who use the forest as a primary source of food and shelter.
