CRISPR-Cas Potential

This week we have participated in World Food Prize events in Des Moines and on our campus. One hot topic that keeps emerging, with potential to help feed our growing population, is CRISPR-Cas technology. Linked below is a video that was shared at the Borlaug Dialogue in Des Moines this week. We encourage you to watch the linked video and utilize the discussion points below to guide conversations around the globe!

CRISPR-Cas for Healthy Seed Development

Discussion Points

  • Explain what CRISPR-Cas technology is and how it works?
  • How can CRISPR-Cas technology be beneficial in agriculture and help feed our growing population?
  • It has been stressed throughout the week that we need to educate the public on what CRISPR-Cas is. Why is this so important?
  • In your opinion what is the best way to educate the public on this technology?

CRISPR-Cas can be beneficial in agriculture and help feed our growing population by being able to target specific genes in the genomes of plants and animals to improve pest resistance and other beneficial traits. It also can lower the amount of time needed to produce a new crop variety.

CRISPR-Cas is a good way to make new or the same plants. They can also change or rewrite the genetic code of the plant.

CRISPR-Cas is a technology that changes and replaces DNA coding to more efficiently change plants to be more resistant to internal and external stresses, or to increase the productivity and nutritional value of the crops.

Clustered, Regularly, Interspaced, Short, Palindromic, Repeats
They genetically modify seeds.
They would help people grow more crops that last longer and benefit more people.
because what there doing is good but for me genetically modifying seeds can create problems in the future because we dont know the effects of gmos on humans quite yet.
Have required science classes in school that teach about this technology

it can be beneficial to the world because you can get more of beater crops with lease resources so its a win win win i gess

CRISPR-Cas can be very beneficial because the technology can genetically change the plants to become much more resistant to disease, with stand drought much better, and can produce more resources without have to use may more products or pay much more. Overall this is a very beneficial technology how ever if something goes wrong while making the genetic changes it could damage the plant.

CRISPR-Cas reads the genome of the plant and depending on how the Crispr-Cas is programmed it will either delete, replace, or substitute words within the plants genome. With this technology the growing time on certain plants can be cut a few years. (An example the video gave was an 8 year plant was reduced to 5 years.)

CRISPR-Cas is a gene-editing application for plant, animals and humans. In agriculture, it is a way to develop and achieve healthy seeds, this helps agriculture because it helps farmers produce more and better food for the growing population but with less needed resources. With CRISPR-Cas you can improve a plant without having to to move any DNA. With CRISPR-Cas, you can get better yield and have a better drought tolerance along with better nutrition within the plant. If CRISPR-Cas is able to produce more and better food, then it is something that we should inform the public on.
